There's something distinctly Earthworm Jim-like about the Nifelheimer in the flashback. I probably thought making a completely new and original design for a one-off character (one panel even) was a waste, so I didn't put much thought into it. The fiercesome version of the hero was fun though! It's like Wario and Dr. Robotnik (we still call him that, right?) all rolled into one.
